5 Things I never leave for an Adventure without

Waterproofs
Regardless of the time of year or weather forecast I never leave the house without a waterproof jacket. In fact I have a dedicated 'bag jacket', this is a jacket that lives in the bottom of my bag. It's not my best jacket but it's also not my worse. I know that if the weather takes unexpected turn I will at least have something that will keep the worst off me. My current bag jacket is a Montain Equipment Tupilak
First Aid Kit
A basic first aid kit and how to use it, is essential. A set of plasters, painkillers, sanitary towels and a compression self-adhesive bandage or vet wrap, is all that you really need. Anymore than that is adding extra weight and unless you're a medical professional, the chances are you won't know how to use it.
Headtorch
The plan is never to stay out until you need a headtorch, but if you'll really miss it if you get caught short. After a fairly exciting evening on a multi-pitch in the dark, I never leave the house without one. I use a Fenix HM65R-T and I also carry a spare battery. If I'm travelling ultra-light or just want a torch that can fit in my pocket I take a Petzl Bindi.
Waterbottle
Seems obvious, and it is. However you'll miss it when you don't have it. Talk to any outdoor professional and they will often have some sort of unhealthy attachment to their favourite waterbottle. I'm a huge fan of a Nalgene, however if it holds water and fits in your bag it'll do the job.
Extra Layer
I carry a synthetic jacket in the bottom of my bag in a dry bag with my bag waterproof. It is well loved and well used, however if caught in a pinch I know it will keep me warm. After 3 winters in the Canadian Rockies always having a layer that you never plan to use in your bag has proved invaluable.
